Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Her performance as a singer, music, film and TV artist has earned her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was born and raised in Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10 years old. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark the state of New Jersey. She was also raised through the Baptist Church. In her early twenties Her cousin gifted Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to gentle and loving in Arabic. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. The play she played in her high school she performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah first began to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's first group, made up of several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King made an audition recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to the host of Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. The track caught the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who has signed Latifah and released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
